Scandi Loft Kitchen in a Converted Workshop, Montpelier, Bristol

Montpelier, Bristol

Montpelier, Bristol

Nestled in the heart of Montpelier, Bristol, this former workshop was transformed into a characterful open-plan living space. The brief was to create a kitchen that didn’t feel like an afterthought in a large, windowless space—but rather a warm, inviting hub of the home. With light pouring in from a central roof lantern, we leaned into a minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic to complement the building’s industrial bones.

The kitchen is built on a bespoke, powder-coated steel frame in bold RAL 3022 red, paired with birch plywood fronts and tactile cut-out handles. A terrazzo-topped island in Durat solid surface adds a splash of colour with subtle blue and gold flecks. Clean, white square tiles create a simple splashback, grounding the space without competing with the materials. A stainless steel Belfast sink and exposed appliances reinforce the workshop roots, while custom birch plywood boxing for the extractor and floating shelves offer cohesion and warmth.

Challenged by uneven walls and quirky beams, this kitchen embraces its imperfections, resulting in a space that feels open yet grounded—contemporary yet full of character.
